Blue Tit Cam

The web cam is currently offline. We had no birds nesting in our box this year (2014). We are hoping to move the box before 2015's nesting season.

Welcome!

Here you can watch a live webcam from our blue tit bird box in Maidenhead, Berkshire, UK. If you're lucky you will see some activity, be it teritory establishing, nest building, the eggs, or chicks being fed. View the webcam above. You can refresh this page to see the latest images.

The images

Webcam is currently offline.

The webcam takes an image every minute and is live from 05:00 to 21:00 (5am-9pm) UK time. Outside of this time frame it is too dark and so there is nothing to see (the webcam does not have lights as they would disturb the birds). This page shows the last 10 minutes of action. To view large versions just click the small thumbnails and the large image at the top image changes.

The images shown are from a camera looking down towards the floor of the nest box. The round open door of the nest box is to the left.

2014 Summary

During the summer of 2013 our bird box was inhabited by a swarm of bees. We ignored them and they eventually left. Stupidly, we didn't clean out the box afterwards and we think this is why no birds nested in our box during the 2014 nesting season.

2013 Summary

You can view a diary showing shots from the web feed and videos, but here's a quick run-down of what has been happening:

  • 26 January 2013: Bird spotted and photographed going in to nest box
  • 12 April: web cam restarted - blue tit nesting
  • 22 April first egg laid
  • 23 April first night mum slept in the nest box
  • 27 April five eggs now, we think
  • 15 May chicks hatch
  • 18 May mum and dad blue tit abandon nest

2012 Summary

This is what happened in 2012 when the chicks hatched but were deserted at 1 day old. You can see diary entries for these events too.

  • 5 April: first blue tit visitors noticed
  • 7 April: nest building starts
  • 13 April: nest complete
  • 21 April: first egg laid
  • 28 April: last (8th) egg laid
  • 11 May: eggs hatch 9:00am (13 days after last egg laid)

  • 16 June: Web cam is taken offline as there is nothing to see. Nest box has already been cleaned out.

See the nest box web cam diary for details.
